Podcast: The 3 Journalistos on NAC

So what do you call a gathering of Matt Hines (Infoworld), Mike Fratto (Network Computing), Joel Snyder (Opus One), Alan Shimel (StillSecure) and Mitchell Ashley (StillSecure) in one hour-long NAC podcast? Something well worth listening to. I will not repeat what they say but rather point out that their discussion is far ranging, opinionated, insightful and civil. Topics include: How will NAC products differ in 18 months, why is the NAC marketplace so fragmented (and confusing), what are enterprises really doing with NAC today, why has Cisco not embraced NAC Standards (i.e, TNC) and what is the likely impact of Microsoft NAP after Vista is "pervasive" and Longhorn has shipped.

A Closer Look At the Cisco NAC Profiler - Part 1

As long as it appears useful I am going to track the “significant issues” about the Cisco NAC Profiler raised by other analysts, journalists and vendors; continue to collect data and arguments; and strive to clearly separate fact, opinion and bias. The goal is to help readers better understand what the NAC Profiler CAN and Can NOT do for them in their own particular networks and organizations.

NAC Product Profile: StillSecure Safe Access

In product spotlights I review the security features, functions and architectures of individual products AND encourage readers to discuss them. My objectives? To identify (1) the situations where each product is well-suited and (2) highlight important issues and trade-offs an organization should consider when weighing the use of a product or similar ones.

Policing Your Network With NAC - Part 1

In this post we review the range of security policies that can defined with available NAC products and focus on three topics.

  1. What criteria can be used to assess the security posture of an endpoint?
  2. What actions can "posture checks" trigger?
  3. What steps can be taken to balance security and end user productivity/inconvenience?

Cisco Extends NAC To Non-Authenticating Endpoints

The new Cisco NAC Profiler (1) reduces the effort required to control which non-authenticating devices are allowed on a network, (2) detects and blocks suspicious behavior on these devices, and (3) prevents the address spoofing of non-authenticating devices which could enable attackers to circumvent conventional network admission controls.
