Highlights From the Fourth Quarter of 2006

In the fourth quarter of 2006 the total Network Security Market increased 6 percent quarter-to-quarter to $1.31 billion and grew 10 percent over Q4 2005.

The SSL VPN market was an especially strong contributor to this total as SSL VPN sales grew eleven percent sequentially in Q3, generating $78.7 million in revenue, and climbed 41 percent over Q4 2005. SSL VPN market share leaders for the year were Juniper, Citrix, F5, Aventail, Nortel and Cisco whose market shares were 27.1, 14.0, 11.4, 10.3, 9.0 and 8.5 percent, respectively. Please note the inclusion of Cisco in this category for the first time as they have ramped the capabilities of their product, which is now more competitive with other vendor's solutions.

The SSL VPN segment is being driven, in part, by logistically distributed Enterprises seeking flexibility in accessing remote network resources and applications in a secure fashion. Other drivers include the replacement of less flexible, legacy IPSec VPN remote access solutions, central deployment for internal secure access, parallel deployment with wireless LANs for additional layers of security, and Service Provider deployment for secure remote access managed services. What's more, SRG believes that in time SSL VPNs will further displace their IPSec rivals for site-to-site deployments as well.
